Seaton, Devon, England

This section is all about possible places to go, to eat, to wander, to amuse.
The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth. Obviously donkeys!! Young donkeys, retired donkeys, not too well donkeys (don't worry the Sanctuary has a large hospital). A good cafe, ice cream stall, free parking, free entry and if you wander the paths some fantastic view. Great for the younger children.
Axe Valley Wildlife Park - just outside Axminster . Large variety of smaller animals. Most friendly. Cafe, Picnic area. Outside the summer months best to check if they are open.

Go about 8 miles west along the coast road and you will come to Seaton, Axmouth, Colyford & Colyton and the Axe Estuary (absolutely beautiful) (A3052) Axmouth is a small village on the Axe Estuary. Home of two excellent pubs - The Harbour and The Ship. Both serve good food, good ale and have a comfortable relaxed atmosphere. Very pleasant, helpful staff.

Okay - now for Seaton. Seaton has its Jurassic Centre. The site says: Travel through time, discover hidden wonders and have a great day out! The Centre is fun, children, and you and me, can learn a lot about those amazing dinosaurs, etc. It does have a great cafe (with outside seating if weather allows). It has an interesting blog .

Seaton / Colyton also has a tram line. You can catch the tram at either end and have a leisurely trip alongsiide the estuary. For all the details visit Seaton Tram Company Thee is a cafe at both terminals but the Colyton Terminal is much roomier, great cafe and you can sit on the platform. Plenty of car parking.

If you want a leisurely (flat) walk - then walk along the Esplanade. Beautiful views West. If you catch the sunset - amazing. And there is a great 'Hideaway Cafe' at the far end of the Esplanade. Great tea, great coffee, great cakes! Another cafe which offers great food - a lot of it vegan is The Terrace Arts Cafe on the front at what is called Fishermans Gap. Sort of half way down the Esplanade. I have just glanced through their menu. Everything sounds totally delicious.

Another great walk is The Seaton Wetlands. About a mile out of Seaton on the Colyford Road. It is a flat walk, wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Hides from which to have a good look at what is going on bird wise and a Visitors Centre

Beer A great fishing village, about 2 miles west of Seaton. Three pubs - all good. The Dolphin, The Anchor and The Barrel of Beer. Down on the beach (admittedly pebbles) three good cafes - Ducks, Hive Beach and one more! And Beer is a good place to go out mackerel fishing from. Beer also has a Youth Hostel at the top end of the town. Our son and his family stayed there last year and said it was very comfortable, beautiful views inland (can't see the sea from there). There is also a rumour about a headless horseman who drives a horse and cart up a green lane from the hostel to Bovey House. Best to avoid.
